Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto

with Tchaikovsky Competition Winner Daniil Trifonov

@ Thomas Wolfe Auditorium

Barber – Adagio for Strings

Franck – Psyché

Tchaikovsky – Piano Concerto No. 1
Daniil Trifonov, piano

For February, we begin with Samuel Barber’s meditative, slowly-unfolding Adagio for Strings.  You may have first heard this music associated with JFK’s funeral, or in the soundtrack to Platoon, but the Adagio stands on its own as one of the most emotional pieces of the previous century, from the pen of an American master on the verge of international fame.  We then perform music of César Franck – his gorgeous score to Psyché.  Based on the famous pair of lovers, Psyche and Eros, this music teems with sensuality.  We are proud to present young Tchaikovsky Competition winner, Daniil Trifonov.  Continuing our tradition of inviting excellent Cleveland Institute of Music students, Daniil has already emerged as an artist in demand on the international concert scene.  We are thrilled that he will perform his signature piece: Tchaikovsky’s beloved Piano Concerto No. 1 to cap an evening of Valentine-inspired delights.
