In addition, the first place winner will perform at the recommendation of Maestro Daniel Meyer as soloist with the Asheville Symphony at a concert during the 2013-2014 season.

Winner’s Recital

All contestants who receive an award in the competition will also perform in a winners’ recital for the public on Sunday, April 7, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. A reception will be held following the concert. Please notify your accompanist of this requirement.

Competition Process

Contestants must proceed through the following steps:

  1. Compositions selected must be for solo instrument and orchestra.  Orchestral accompaniment needs to be readily available.
  2. The student must submit a recording of him/herself performing the work to be used in the competition no later than February 9, 2013.  This selection must be memorized. Students must also submit a written application and the $35 fee with the recording.
  3. If selected, the contestant will perform the entire selection by memory for a panel of judges on March 23, 2013 at Grace Covenant Church in Asheville.
  4. Semi-finalists will return in the afternoon to play in the Final Round.
  5. If a contestant is named a prize winner or receives an honorable mention, he/she is expected to perform in the Winners’ Recital for the public on Sunday, April 7, 20113 at 3:00 p.m. at the same location. Please make certain your accompanist understands this requirement.

Recording Instructions

Please provide a high quality recording on compact disk (CD-R) containing the entire movement of a concerto or stand-alone work.  Accompaniment is optional for this first phase of the competition.  Recordings should not be edited and only continuous performances of entire movements or works are allowed.  Label the CD with your name and the repertoire you have recorded.

Judges

A jury of three distinguished musicians will serve as judges for the Young Artist Competition.  If a contestant has studied with or otherwise had close professional or personal ties with a judge, the judge will disqualify himself for that contestant. In that case, the scores from the other two judges will be averaged to provide a third score.

A presentation of any or all of the awards is at the judges’ discretion. Decisions of the judges will be announced at the end of the competition. The judges’ decision is final.

Application

There is a non-refundable application fee of $35.00. Applications for the competition must be sent to the address below no later than February 9, 2013. All applicants will be notified of their acceptance or non-acceptance by February 22nd. Applicants who are accepted will also be notified of their performance time by February 22nd.
