The Asheville Symphony Youth Orchestra was disappointed and deeply saddened to learn that the orchestra program at Asheville Middle School will not be offered in the coming school year. Access to high quality, in-school music education, including orchestra, is critical for the education and development of young people.

ASYO believes deeply in the value of daily, high-quality music instruction provided by qualified educators in our public schools. School-based music education plays an essential role in a student’s musical development, and provides opportunities for access, participation, and community that outside organizations, including ASYO, cannot replace.

For students who wish to continue their orchestral studies, ASYO remains a complement to school-based music education, as it has for many years. Tuition assistance is available for all students, including those attending Asheville Middle and Asheville High, and no student is turned away due to financial need. We hope that the ASYO and other community-based opportunities can provide additional support for students and families while we advocate for the restoration of a strong, school-based orchestra program within Asheville City Schools.

We remain grateful for our longstanding partnership with Asheville City Schools and committed to supporting its students, families, and educators as we work together toward a strong future for string education in Asheville.
